Wagyu genetics make the grade.

The Wagyu industry has come a long way since 1976 when the first four Wagyu fullblood bulls were imported to Texas A&M University in the U.S. The genetic pool grew with a handful of full blood genetics being imported in the 1990s but ceased when the Japanese Government declared the breed a national treasure, and no other genetics were allowed to leave Japan.

Originally brought in to improve the tenderness of other breeds through cross-breeding it soon became clear that Wagyu had the ability to bump the grades off these offspring into the AAA and Prime+ grades on just the first cross, especially in Angus cattle.

Unfortunately in today’s scientific age there’s still no pill or hormone to make cattle grade AAA or prime. Each animal requires the genetic disposition to do so.

In Canada the last time we checked, only 62% of all the beef processed graded AAA and less than 1.5% made prime.

With more than 25 years of experience with the Wagyu breed I remain optimistic that the Wagyu breed is here to stay. Let this experience help you produce more AAA, more prime, and more profits.

If you are a commercial cattleman in a pasture to plate program, niche market operator, or just want to raise better tasting beef then don’t overlook the benefits the Wagyu breed has to offer. They are easy calving, gentle natured, and have the ability to take your herd to the next level by gaining you more AAA and prime.
